Suggestions for How to Use G3C
Each of the Unfolding Case Studies (UCS) have been created to emphasize key challenges that healthcare providers may face in clinical practice and, if applicable for a specific discipline, addresses one or more of the established genetic/genomic competencies. Similar to healthcare provider experience in practice, there are numerous ways to progress though the patient encounter and beyond. The UCS provides a starting point to consider what questions to ask, what information to gather, and the ethical, legal and social issues often encountered in practice. Building on the UCS, the educator can offer additional content to supplement information provided in the UCS. Since the evidence associated with genetics and genomics continues to evolve, users of the UCS are guided to external resources for supplemental materials applicable to the patient encounter.
To begin using G3C, students should be instructed to click on Getting Started on the front page of G3C, to select a case, enter the clinic and begin by reviewing the case materials located in the patient’s record. When ready, the student progresses to the patient encounter and begins by selecting a question to ask the patient. Additional student activities associated with specific questions are located below the patient video. Supplementary patient materials, including those that the nurse gathers during the encounter, are located by icons in the box to the right and can be viewed at anytime during the case.
